Just a week after its launch on 5 July, Threads, Meta's new microblogging app, has already amassed an impressive 100 million sign-ups. But as is often the case with popular trends, scammers have wasted no time in taking advantage of the popularity. Kaspersky experts have discovered several deceptive tactics used by scammers to exploit the app's users. They mainly impersonate the Threads app to trick users and potentially gain unauthorised access to accounts, personal data and even finances.

Scammers have developed phishing pages that mimic a non-existent web version of Threads. Users are tricked into entering their login details, inadvertently revealing their private data to scammers. Because Threads is linked to other META services, users also risk losing access to various social media accounts, such as Instagram and Facebook. Not only does this raise privacy concerns, such as identity theft and doxing, but more worryingly, it poses financial risks. Personal bank details or even company finances can end up in the wrong hands, as companies use these accounts to create advertising campaigns.

Another scam involves a fictitious service called Threads Coin. That service claims to offer enhanced capabilities by bridging the gap between the physical and digital worlds, specifically within the Metaverse. Users are enticed to buy this coin using Ethereum. However, it is important to note that the only result users experience is financial loss.

Another programme allows users to generate free followers. They can choose 10,000, 25,000 or 50,000 followers. Once the desired option is selected, the user is asked to undergo a human verification process. This involves selecting one of the available options, including sending a text message and potentially winning a special prize. However, to claim the prize, the user may have to make a payment. Unfortunately, the user ends up losing money and never receives the promised prize. Moreover, the programme encourages users to share the programme via text message, unknowingly helping to spread the scam.

"Scammers have mastered the art of capitalising on trendy topics and stress the importance of constant vigilance. The large number of scams around the popular app Threads reminds us of the risks we face in the digital landscape. From deceptive scams to data collection tactics, these fraudsters are doing everything they can to compromise your personal and financial security. To protect ourselves, we need to adopt a sceptical attitude, scrutinise suspicious activity and prioritise cybersecurity measures. By remaining cautious amid the allure of trendy topics, we can strengthen our defences and navigate the digital landscape with confidence," said Olga Svistunova, security expert at Kaspersky.
