Utrecht, Feb. 17, 2023 – Kaspersky conducted research on cryptocurrency user trends and found that only 16 percent of European respondents feel well informed about potential cryptocurrency threats. Almost one in three users (32%) have no information at all. Kaspersky also found that half (49%) of all respondents had been affected in some way by cryptocurrency crime and that more than half (55%) of European respondents do not believe current cryptocurrency protection systems are effective. These and other findings are in Kaspersky's new report.

Are users familiar with cryptocurrency threats?

According to the recent survey*, a significant proportion of individuals are unaware of the potential threats that cryptocurrency owners face. Despite the growing popularity of cryptocurrency, only 16 percent of respondents feel extremely or very well informed about the potential risks of using them, while 32 percent have no information at all. Moreover, awareness of these threats decreases with age, with younger consumers under 35 being better informed.

Remarkably, however, cyber threats, such as scams (26 percent) and theft (25 percent), are less often seen as a negative aspect than rapid value changes (41 percent) and the fact that you can lose a lot of money (39 percent)....

47 percent of European respondents did not know they could be targeted by crypto threats such as cryptominers, even if they do not own cryptocurrency. These are programs that secretly generate cryptocurrency for their owners using the resources of other computers, whether they own cryptocurrency or not.

Threats vary by region
In South Africa and Asia-Pacific countries, crypto investment fraud (23% and 15%, respectively) and fake apps (16% and 15%, respectively) are major concerns. In Europe, extortion attacks are the biggest concern (13%). Here, scammers threaten to reveal browsing history unless they provide private keys or send cryptocurrency.

Does cryptocurrency need more protection?

Half (49%) of all respondents had been affected in some way by cryptocurrency-related crime. In addition, 55 percent of European respondents do not believe current cryptocurrency protection systems are effective.
